Gypsy River Camping in Masterton
This was one of the best places we have ever stayed with the kids! Something for everyone and our wonderful hosts made us feel most welcome. Home baking, tranquillity and relaxation as well as stimulation for the children. They thoroughly enjoyed the flying fox, kayaks and rope swing and we won't ever forget marvelling at the night sky whilst soaking in the fir heated outside bath. The caravans were snug, beautifully furnished with a quirky twist – the candles and torches were a hit too!
ESTHER – JULY 2014
Our small family stayed at the Gypsy Caravans for two nights during a sunny midwinter weekend. The caravans were clean, well-appointed, comfortable and warm throughout the night, and the gas flame heater in the kitchen meant the cookhouse caravan wasn't too chilly either. The sunny days were perfect for hiking at Mt. Holdsworth or for simply playing outside. Our 3 y.o. daughter loved the tractor ride and seeing the weaner calves get fed their hay snack! The best parts: having the place to yourself, the sound of the Ruamahanga river rushing along, and the bush bath. There is no electricity – laptop and other electronic devices stayed in the car for the weekend, woo hoo!!!! (however it is something to keep in mind for those needing to charge phones or use hairdryers – I made use of these at the main house). Fridge and pantry were fully stocked – do not bother bringing groceries! You will not lack for anything! If your family has special dietary requirements, best to let Mary & Steve know in advance. Would love to come back, perhaps sharing the experience with another family.
ANNE – MAY 2014
I just wanted to say a huge thank you to Steve and Mary for making a rare weekend away for my boyfriend and I a very special one. We were blown away from the moment we arrived and have been raving about our stay in the Gypsy caravans ever since. It was the perfect place for the two of us to spend our time and would recommend this to any couple wanting something a little bit different to a hotel without having to compromise on the comforts. Thanks again, your attention to detail is excellent and your baking outstanding!
AMANDA & JEREMY – APRIL 2014
My two children and I stayed in the gypsy caravans for three nights in the middle of summer, and had a lovely time. We didn't feel the need to leave the camp during our stay, as there was lots to do, and the weather was warm and sunny. We spent our time kayaking (kayaks and life jackets provided) and swimming, trying out the swing and flying fox, and having a fire-heated 'bush bath'. Hosts Mary and Steve have gone to lots of trouble to ensure that you have everything you need (they supplied things like insect repellent and batteries for torches, and the kitchen is better equipped than many motels!), and they also provide yummy home baking, generous supplies for your first meal, and a breakfast of hot croissants one morning. Bring lots of books for lazy reading (although there was a good supply of magazines there too!), or make use of the game cupboard, and enjoy the lovely peace and quiet of having the campground to yourself.
PHOEBE – JANUARY 2014
When told we were going to experience gypsy caravan living with my daughters husband and grandchildren I had no idea what luxury awaited us... 3 caravans, beautifully appointed; lovely linen, a fantastic shower, comfortable beds, kitchen; and everything thought of for children – seesaw, cricket, card games, canoes, with the river only 50 yards away. A truly wonderful stay highlighted by fresh croissants and muffins delivered for breakfast!

A wonderful, enchanting and thoroughly relaxing place to enjoy a day or two, or more. If only we had more time. The kids loved the play ground, flying fox, kayaks and river swimming... the parents loved the peace and tranquillity with all the pleasures of “glamping”. Will definitely return. You’ve created a slice of paradise here Steve and Mary. Nga mihi aroha.
